On This Date- Max Kaufman

It was on October 11th 1939 that Albert Einstein first wrote his famous letter to FDR on the possibilities of a nuclear weapon. In this letter Einstein shaped our modern day by urging the importance of the need for the development of a US atomic program. Without this who knows what state the world would be in today. I am not one to encourage war and destruction, but I will be very clear in saying that it is a good thing that the US discovered the atomic bomb first. Some might argue that the world would be better off without "The Bomb" but do not want to even imagine what the world would be like if Germany had beaten us to the punch, so to speak. I think that at that point in history nuclear weapons would have been created regardless of the US discovering them, so I'm glad we were the first thanks to Albert Einstein's letter.
