When I was about 10, I played on a rec soccer team. At the time I didn't know it, but my best friend Caleb and I played on the same team and went to school together. We played our first soccer season together, my dad being the coach, and we lost about every game we played. At the end of the season, we played in this tournament called the Commonwealth Cup, There, we also lost every single game we played. We came back in the spring, and our team was mostly the same, a couple people had become too old and some newer kids had replaced them. When we played that season, we won about half of our games, but we still couldn't beat the best team in the league... the Racers. Come next fall, Caleb and I were still on the same team and at this point we were good friends and had some chemistry together. We played that season and we won the majority of our games. We again played in the Commonwealth Cup. This year, we had the toughest bracket, with 5 teams, instead of 4, a returning final 4 team, and a hometown team. We were just the scrubs from Lexington... We had to beat the 4 teams we played just to make the semi-finals. So we played through the first day, and we beat the first team 4-0. The second game, we played another team, and beat them 2-1 after our goalie scored on a punt. On the second day, it got tougher. We played the hometown team first, we started off down 2-0, but then Caleb and I combined to finish the game with a combined 5 goals, with Caleb getting the hat trick. The last game was the toughest... the returning final 4 team. We got off to an early lead, because I tried to cross the ball, but it went straight into the goal instead. Then Caleb scored. They then scored making it 2-2, but on the ensuing kickoff, my friend Nathan shot it off the kickoff and scored! We ended up winning the game 4-2. On the next weekend, we would play in the Final 4. We played our first game, and Caleb scored with 2 minutes left to make us go on to the Championship. There, we would play a former Select Soccer team. As a rec-team we didn't know how good they were. but we just went out and played. 5 minutes into the game, I was really lucky and scored on a header. The game went back and forth for 60 minutes, even had a coach get kicked out (not my dad but my other coach) and had a few lucky saves by our goalie, but we ended up winning the game. We went crazy! After I tackled a friend of mine we shook hands with the opposing team and received our trophy. After that, my dad brought us in and told us something about the team we played that we didn't know before the game- before their game against us, they had not been scored on in any game in the tournament, and the only goal scored on them was by our team. At that point all of us 11 year olds were just crazy about winning the championship, and we didn't know the odds were that much against us. Even just playing for fun at that age, I still remember it like it was yesterday, and it was a lot more fun when you win.
Sorry that was long, but it was awesome, may have gone a little over 150 words.
