For The Love And Hate Of Television - Meagan Hale
Sitting around the living room, everyone squeezed onto the couch or in a chair, blankets covering everyone while we await the theme music for the next episode of a favorite tv show. In the mean time we are discussing last weeks episode and making guesses as to the outcome of this weeks. Before there were tvs, families huddled around the radio, and before that it was a fire listening to a member tell a story that was passed down through their lineage. There is a sense of community when watching tv together. This is one of the reasons I enjoy watching tv. Another reason is solely for entertainment purposes. We can watch shows about our favorite hobby such as cooking or an interactive show such as wheel of fortune or we can watch genre shows such as action, adventure, horror, or reality. I watch tv because there are so many options to choose from for whatever mood I'm in. I also watch for both educational purposes and as my main source of news. Depending on the show I learn something new all the time while watching tv. As for the news aspect, there's several channels each giving me insight into what is happening in the world. Two of my favorite shows right now are Justified, which follows a U.S. Marshal in Harlan County, Kentucky, and The 100 which is a post apocalyptic show.
