First I would gather my family and hopefully others who would be of use, preferably people who have a specific skill set which is key to survival. A doctor, someone who knows how to hunt and track animals for food, someone with government or military connections who could find a safe zone or an evacuation site. Next would be to gather any food and water we could, weapons for defense, and find a safer location. Staying in a house in a neighborhood surrounded by people is not the best idea when people start becoming zombies. When finding a safer location we do not tell others where we are going in case of losing our spot. Most people should be avoided all together as panic makes people lose their humanity and they can become more dangerous than the zombies. Having more than one working vehicle is ideal in case we need a speedy escape. When choosing a new location, I would pick something either rural in hopes that it will be hard to find and the zombie population will be significantly less, or something larger with several exits but not too big as it could become too difficult to defend. A structure with a preexisting barrier such as a prison is ideal but not as common as you would think. Resources are valuable now and should be treated as such, there is no room for wasting. I would be very hesitant to trust other people outside of my group because people's sense of self preservation could be a danger to my own well being. Although easier said than done, I would try to learn something with every zombie I encounter because the more I know the better prepared I am. Once in a safe location where I can defend myself and have a somewhat steady flow of resources, my only option is to settle down and stay alive unless threatened in which case I would start the process over.
