What is it good for? - Adrian Wyllie

War and terrorism. The forces that push violently against each other in a military struggle to become the dominant force in an area, or to push a point. Honestly, with modern technologies, I believe that there is an alternative to war, and to terrorism. There is a way to get heard, around the world, without the use of a firearm or destructive weapon. We all know how to make ourselves heard, here on the internet. We all know how to fight peacefully, we all know how to debate intensely.
We have the combined knowledge that could lead to a more peaceful future. When the actions turn violent, the best way to retaliate is through the words of a video, or a blog post. Actions are the strengths of the military powers of the world, but words run it.
It isn't a question of when is it right to war, it is now a question of HOW it is right to war. When we fight, we can fight with our words. when we war, why can we not do the same. Negotiations, or limited peaceful war, can be expanded with modern technologies and the internet. Ceasefires can be ordered, quite literally, from twitter.
We also have another tool at our disposal. The U.S. Military has started a shift to drones and unmanned operations, to minimise losses. But there is a way to fight in a virtual way, through games. Games have been a large part of human history, with the Olympic games in ancient greece helping to prevent wars. Now we can game from anywhere, with anyone else anywhere else in the world.
These games are not a replacement for war, but a way to fight wars. No lives need to be lost, No cities need to be captured, all the warring sides would need is a large server that could accurately simulate the war, the sides and their powers. Run the program as a deathmatch. Simple.
But humans have a violent tendency. Games will not settle this. Wars often don't. So any solution we can come up with, we can minimize casualties, but we cannot eradicate the threat.
