1. Would you rather be a slug or a squirrel?
2. Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?
3. Why is The Lord of The Rings the greatest work of art humankind has ever produced? (note the absence of possible alternative views)
I will answer prompt number three.
Lord of The Rings is the greatest creation that has ever been produced by any sentient being. This is due to many great accomplishments of the stories, including the originality and character development in both the books and the movies.
Starting with originality, Tolkien wins objectively. Nothing can match the combination of different preexisting ideas that he has thrown together or the number of new ones he created. For example, he created a language. I don't believe there is anything left to discuss here.
Moving on to character development, a key aspect of any storytelling device. Boromir, one of the characters from earlier in the story, went through several transitions (extremely apparent in the film adaptation) that illustrate the author's (and later, director's) incredible and superhuman ability. Thats right, Tolkien and Jackson transcend human existence.
These are only two of the great parts of the Lord of The Rings, to go on through all of them would take several lifetimes and may in fact be impossible. This is why this is the best story within the bounds of human comprehension.
