Hi! My name is Maya Creamer, and, as you know, I'm a junior in the Liberal Arts Academy at Henry Clay High School. In my free time, I love to read, play the violin, play with my cat (who may or may not hate me at times), and spend time with my family and friends. I am also involved with my temple, Temple Adath Israel, and I am going to help teach the Pre-K/Kindergarten religious school class this year. At school, I am a 3G mentor, and I plan to be a part of Beta Club, as well as any other club that seems interesting and/or fun.
The most meaningful part of my summer vacation was volunteering at the FACE Time camp at Breckinridge Elementary. FACE is a three-week day camp for kids who have been in the United States for two years or less; the goal is to help them learn English, get them caught up in many school subjects, and allow them to see that they are not alone. The kids at the camp come from all over the world; this year, about 1/3 of the 50-or-so kids were from Nepal. Volunteering at this camp really opened my eyes to how different the culture of the United States is from many other countries-a third-grader in my group was shocked that, at the mature age of 16, I wasn't married yet! FACE also showed me just how difficult it is for these kids to come to this country, often knowing little to no English, and enter a school full of kids who don't speak their language, and who are often far ahead of them academically. Hopefully, the kids in the program got as much out of the camp as I did.
It's hard for me to choose one thing that "geeks" me, because it is constantly changing. Right now, it is probably the Broadway Musical Newsies, because I saw it with my grandparents this summer, and I LOVED it. It is based on the Manhattan newsboy strike of 1899, and it is full of amazing singing and dancing. Because it is a mostly male cast, all of the singing is incredibly powerful, and very empowering to listen to. It makes me feel like anything is possible-if a bunch of rag-tag newsboys can stand up to publishing giants like William Randolph Hurst and Joseph Pulitzer and win, I can make it through a school year packed with 5 AP classes!
