This film captures all of the beauty of the show in the best way possible in a 3 hour time frame. Many would think that perhaps the show ran too long for a normal audience member to sit through. I would agree with this, however, one must also take into account the nature of the story. After being adapted from a 1200+ page book, capturing each intricate detail is incredibly hard and much was lost in this process. Still, the raw emotion the screenplay brings is hard to even consider lacking. My only true gripe with this movie version is its cutting off of incredibly important songs. Only the first verses of many of the songs are included and they loose their power and gusto. The main characters (being Valjean and Cosette, namely) receive an inordinate amount of screentime in comparison to other important characters such as Les Amis de l'ABC. It's a great film, but it was hard to fit into the parameters necessary.
I'm sorry!
